Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Mar 27, 1862, p. 3. DIED. December 1st, 1861, in Valpariso, Chili, South America, of Liver Affection, Mr. John Thompson, brother of Mr. Oliver Thompson and Mrs. Purvis, of this place, aged 31 years, and 9 months. The deceased was for some time a resident of the Southern States, but left in April last, in company with a friend from Indiana, for South America, where he lived only four months. Filled with the brightest anticipations and most brilliant hopes, he bid farewell to his friends, expecting to return in two or three years, but God, the wise Dispenser of Providence, has otherwise decreed. Day by day our thoughts averted [sic] to him as again one day joining us at the social fireside, and participating in the joys of home. But, alas! the emptiness of human thought. He has changed the perplexities of earth for the pleasures heaven. Saddening as the thought is that so great a distance intervened between our dear friend and ourselves, yet it is consoling to know that a kind friends was near to administer to him, and smooth his dying pillow. The last act of kindness shown was in having a Christian burial; a funeral sermon being delivered by the Rev. Mr. Trumbull, and American minister. Let us bow in meek submission, and try to conform our lives to the teachings of such dispensations, remembering that God afflicts not willingly, but that we may live in closer communion with himself. - M.A.P.
