Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Sep 9, 1863, p. 3. DIED. John S. and James C. Underwood. John was wounded at the battle of Vicksburg, on the 20th of May, 1863, and died two days after, aged 25 years, 3 months, 3 days. James, on the steamer City of Memphis, on the 28th of June, 1863, aged 19 years, 8 months, 3 days. A funeral discourse will be preached on the 20th of September at 10 o'clock A.M., at the Johnston School House, three miles east of Portage. [We are permitted to make the following extract from a letter announcing the above sad intelligence to the mother of the deceased:] Camp in Field, near Bear Creek Miss., July 30, 1863. Mrs Underwood - Dear Madam: A few days ago we received the sad intelligence of your son James' death; he died on the steamer City of Memphis, on the 28th of June, with chronic diarrhea. We left him sick at Vicksburg, when we marched from there some weeks ago, little thinking that it would be the last time we should be permitted to see him. Mrs. Underwood, you have lost a second good son; his comrades in arms have lost a firm friend; and his country a brave and good soldier. He has given up his life for his country. John also died while engaged in deadly strife with the enemy. Never were there two better soldiers than your sons, John and James. It is a hard sacrifice for a mother to offer to her country two noble boys, but her loss is their gain. Truly yours, A.P. Johnson, O.SW., Co. C, 72d Reg.
