Atchley, 89, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Rammage, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton. Mr. Atchley was born in Carmen, Okla., and moved to New Mexico in a covered wagon at age 4. He graduated from Grenville High School. He was active in the Baptist Church as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Atchley was one of the founding members of the Sierra Grande Cowboy Camp Meeting and started the Thanksgiving Prayer Breakfast in Clayton. He served for three terms in the New Mexico legislature as well as in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He was a delegate to a Republican National Convention and founder of an international business. He married Ruby Edna Smith in 1934. She died in 1991. Survivors include four daughters, Violet Brockman of Clayton, De Anna Richardson and Elaine Aschbacher, both of Sedan, and Teena Atchley of Odessa, Texas; a son, Wayne Atchley of Amarillo; a sister, Genevieve Dillon of Albuquerque; two brothers, Gene Atchley of Clayton and John Atchley of Portales; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, 223 Oak St., Clayton, NM 88415; the Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 629, Portales, NM 88130; or to Olivia's Angels, Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Program, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176.
