Virginia attended primary, secondary, and high school at Burlington, OK. At the age of 17, Virginia was married to Lauren E. (Bud) Kilmer in Enid, OK, on February 8, 1942. This was a Sunday and Bud had come for a weekend leave from his Army duty in Abilene, TX. Saturday they had decided to elope and went to Enid Sunday morning and were married by the Justice of the Peace in the morning. They returned to Alva after the ceremony, then Bud left to return to Abilene, since he was to report into camp by 6:00pm Sunday night. Virginia and Bud have made their home together in Alva for more than sixty years. To their marriage three children were born, Don E. Kilmer of Yukon, Oklahoma, Melvin Dean Kilmer of Waxahachie, Texas, and Kay Ann Kilmer of Edmond, Oklahoma. Virginia has three grandchildren, Keith Kilmer, Santeago, Chile, Kelly Jordan, Austin, Texas, and Scott Kilmer, Abilene, Texas. She has two great grandchildren, Clay and McKenzie Kilmer, Santeago, Chile. Virginia is survived by her husband, Bud Kilmer, of Alva, OK, each of her children; daughters-in-law, Sue Kilmer, Yukon, Oklahoma and Karen Kilmer, Waxahachie, Texas; grandchildren and their spouses; Michelle Kilmer, Jonathan Jordan, and Wendy Kilmer; great grandchildren; one brother, Don Andrews of Post Falls, Idaho; one sister Georgie Faye Jones of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents; George and Ida Andrews, two brothers; Bill and Marvin Andrews; and four sisters; Opal Dooley, Fern Arnell, Alice Andrews and Idella Wallace; and several nieces and nephews. In their early marriage, Virginia stayed at home and finished high school, while Bud went overseas to fight World War II. After graduation, Virginia went to work as a telephone operator for about five years before their first child was born. In 1956, Virginia opened 'Virginia's Gift Shop' in their living room at home. Virginia was always very artistic and enjoyed making all kinds of hand crafts and paintings. She became a very accomplished painter. Virginia has always been very active with the local Church of Christ congregation. She began attending the first Sunday that the congregation was formed in Alva in 1952. There were very few church Services which she did not attend. Virginia helped organize family and ladies church luncheons. She provided housing for Singing School Students for twenty-five years and many other church functions. Virginia was a very devoted wife to Bud for the (61) years of their marriage. She encouraged and supported him in all of their endeavors together. Virginia was primarily a homemaker and exerted all her efforts to raising their children. She was truly a loving, devoted and dedicated Mother and wife. Virginia had dear lifelong friends in Mary Kilmer, her sister-in-law, neighbors Fay Savere, Dorothy Young, and many other ladies including Glenda Tomberlin and Lois Johnson. Virginia's last couple of years were some of the most difficult, as she encountered numerous mini-strokes which ultimately confined her to the wheelchair. However, Virginia maintained a positive outlook on life and assisted Bud whenever possible. She never lost her good sense of humor nor her devotion to God and her family. We all are saddened by her earthly departure on June 3, 2003 but extremely joyous in her eternal rewards. We can truly say that this world was made better, through her endless efforts. We love you, Mom. Funeral Services, 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 at College Hill Church of Christ. Interment at Alva Municipal Cemetery. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
