He had said he was ready to see his wife, Pearl, again, who had predeceased him in December 2003. Ralph was born in Alfalfa County, Okla., on April 21, 1920, to Nora and John Moore. He grew up in Oklahoma and northern Arkansas. In April 1939, Ralph joined Co. 743 of the Civilian Conservation Corps, based out of Calico Rock, Ark. He was discharged from the CCC in March 1942 and entered the U.S. Army in April 1942. Ralph trained with the 128th Infantry Division and, in December 1942, he deployed with the 128th to New Guinea. The 128th was involved in heavy fighting there, suffering many casualties. After his discharge in July 1944, he returned to Arkansas and married his pen pal sweetheart, Pearl Turner, in Ozark on Aug. 8, 1944. Soon after their wedding, they moved to California. Ralph and Pearl lived and raised their family in Napa until about 1977, when Ralph, Pearl and son, Jimmy, moved to American Canyon. Ralph was employed at many jobs during his working life. He spent some time at the Hedgeside Distillery at Monticello and Atlas Peak roads. He worked on ranches in the St. Helena area for a while, hitching a ride back and forth to Napa on the weekends. He worked road construction that took him out of the area for short periods of time. He spent a number of years on paving crew number two at Basalt Rock Company. He last worked on the "0" and "U" presses at the Kaiser Steel Pipe plant in Napa, retiring in about 1978. Both before and after retirement, Ralph took great pleasure working in his yard and garden. He especially enjoyed raising strawberries. After moving to American Canyon Mobile Home Park, he spent many hours on yard and garden work. Many times, he tended to his neighbors' yards, sometimes for pay and sometimes because "it needed to be done, so I did it." In passing, Ralph is survived by his younger brother and sister-in- law, Frankie and Peggy Moore of Parsons, Kan.; his son and daughter- in-law, Ralph L. and Nancy, and grandchildren Kate and Steven Moore of Napa; his daughter, Patricia J. Moore of Port Ludlow, Wash.; and his youngest son, Jimmy Don Moore of American Canyon. At Ralph's request, there was no funeral service. He will be buried beside his wife, Pearl, outside of Cass, Ark. Those wishing to do so could make contributions in Ralph's name to any of the veterans organizations, particularly those assisting wounded and disabled veterans. His family would like to thank all those who treated Ralph so very well during his last days. The family especially thanks the staff at Sierra Vista Nursing Home and the emergency room and I.C.U. staff at Queen of the Valley Hospital. You folks are wonderful! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Alfalfa County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/alfalfa/alfalfa.html
