"Mrs. Margaret Ellen Stauffer Margaret Ellen McDonald, daughter of George and Rebecca McDonald, was born at Rose Hill, Lee county, Virginia, November 30, 1854, and departed this life at Cherokee, Oklahoma, July 3, 1951, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 3 days. She came to Kansas with her parents and other members of the family in 1881 and located at Eureka. While living at Eureka she met and was united in marriage with George Lawrence Stauffer. Their wedding took place in Eureka on September 29, 1886. To their union five sons were born; L.L., R.G., O.M., M.R., and George R., all of whom survive their parents. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer continued to make their home at Eureka until the time of the opening of the Cherokee Strip on September 16, 1893. Mr. Stauffer made the 'race' and drove his stake on the southeast quarter of section 24, township 27, range 12 west. W.I.M. This 'claim' was the family homestead for many years. Mr. Stauffer departed this life July 16, 1944, at the age of 91 years. Mrs. Stauffer became a Christian early in life and was a charter member of a church organized in the early days and meeting in the school house in district No. 160. Later she became a member of the Ingersoll Christian church and at the time of her death, held membership in the Cherokee church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Nearly three score years in this section of the country has brought to Mother Stauffer a multitude of friends who admired her sincerely as one of the pioneer mothers who labored zealously to bring the 'new country' into full development in the ideals of our great country. Surviving are her children; L.R., R.G. and George R. of Cherokee; O.M. of Osborn, Kansas, and M.R. of Pasa Robles, California. There are 25 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters; W.S. McDonald of Cherokee, R.L. McDonald of Neodasha, Kansas, J.F. McDonald of Alva, Mrs. M.A. Downard of Eureka, Kansas, and Mrs. C.A. Beatty of Osborn, Kansas. With these are many other relatives and friends. Last rites were held Friday morning at First Christian church with Dean Mason and W.A. Keller officiating. Singers were Earl Cox, Bob Reitz, Dean Resler and Aubrey Tatro. Accompanist was Mrs. Frank Millspaugh.
