"Pete" Stein Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Stein was born Nov. 7, 1914, on the family farm in Cherokee, Okla. He graduated from Cherokee High School and attended Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1934 and OU Law School in 1936. After graduation from law school he was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association and practiced in Oklahoma City before moving with his bride, Alice Sutton, to Yoakum. While waiting to satisfy his residency requirements he worked as roughneck on a core drilling truck. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in May 1940. He maintained a solo practice in San Antonio before being called to active duty at Fort Sill, Okla. He began his military career as a reserve second lieutenant and served as an artillery officer before leaving the service as a lieutenant colonel in 1946. His active duty lasted a little more than five years. He remained active in the reserves for several years following World War II and eventually reached the rank of colonel. After being discharged in Arkansas and brief stints in Oklahoma and Fort Worth, he came to Amarillo to practice law. While in Amarillo he helped build the law firm of Underwood, Wilson, Berry, Stein and Johnson, P.C. He practiced law for 38 years and retired as partner in 1984. He was active in Association of Defense Counsel and served as secretary in 1962 and Amarillo Bar Association, Texas Bar Association and Oklahoma Bar Association. He was appointed and served two terms as a member of Potter Randall Health Unit and was elected chairman in 1968. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Anne Stein of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nancy Besly of Crosby; two brothers, Leroy Stein and Don Stein, both of Cherokee; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
