All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Timberlake Cemetery--Jet OK Alva Review Courier 4 Aug 2005 Daniel Albert Shorter, 78, Alva Daniel Albert Shorter died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City at age 78. He was born May 20, 1927 in Goltry to Edna I. Mason Shorter and Wiley B. Shorter. He graduated from Northwestern State College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He obtained his Masters in Science Degree from OSU in 1960 and received his Doctor of Philosophy from OSU in 1966. He served proudly in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Margery Jean Peck on January 13, 1946 in Goltry. After moving to Anthony, Kansas then to Stillwater, they settled in Alva in 1960. Dan began his teaching career in Anthony, Kansas where he taught math and initiated the tennis program. They moved to Alva in 1960 where he became a Professor of Biology at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and was known affectionately as "Dr. Dan." After retiring in 1987 from NWOSU he became director of Northwest Family Services in Alva. He served on the boards of Share Medical Center, Northwest Area Vo-Tech, First United Methodist Church, Woods County Retired Teachers Association, Cherokee Strip Museum, and Alva Mural Society. He was an Oklahoma Blood Institute volunteer. He was an active member of Kiwanis, American Legion and Masons. He was a devoted Christian and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Margery of Alva; three daughters, Cynthia Bough and husband, Daniel of Frisco, Texas, Edana Caldwell of Woodward and Sherry Fullbright and husband, Glen of Edmond; one son, Terry Shorter and wife, Lynne of Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Casey Caldwell and wife, Summer of Poulsbo, Washington, Carrie Caldwell of Frisco, Texas, Eric Casper of Oklahoma City, Erin Casper of Edmond, Evan Casper of Edmond, Emily Shorter of St. Louis, Missouri; and Sarah Shorter Kansas City, Missouri; and one sister, Oleeva Evans of Enid. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Lloyd Shorter, George W. Shorter and Alpha John Shorter; and three sisters, Ida Shorter, Ilene Noland and Betty J. Baker. Funeral service will be on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Alva with Rev. Terry Martindale and Rev. J. Weegie Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Timberlake Cemetery south and west of Jet with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Helena.
