Mrs. Mary Ann Gum, Who Celebrated Birthday Thursday, Came Here in 1902. Mrs. Mary Ann Seawell Gum, who Thursday celebrated her 88th birthday, was born October 24, 1947 (1847), in Odessa, Mo. Mrs. Gum is one of the three real granddaughters of the American Revolution in Oklahoma. Her father, Robert H. Seawell, was the son of Sergeant Seawell, who served in the Continental army for three years and was given a large grant of land in Virginia. Mrs. Gum was married to Peyton Welch Gum on December 27, 1869, at Odessa, Mo. They lived there until 1902, when they came to Oklahoma, arriving at Sayre on the first through passenger train which came into Sayre. Mr. Gum opened the first bank in Sayre which is still in existence. Mrs. Gum was immediately identified with the cultural and religious activities of the small frontier town and was one of the organizers of the first Sunday school held in Sayre and is a charter member of the First Methodist church in which she has been a leader for the past 30 years. Receives Flowers. Her charm of manner, artistocracy of breeding and philanthropic interests in the unfortunate have won for her a multitude of friends who because of her illness were unable to call as they had done in the past, but paid their respects by sending many beautiful flowers and other tokens. The pioneer type of woman is ably represented in this woman who followed her husband into the wide open spaces and there through sheer force of personality and character helped to build the commonwealth of today. Mrs. Gum is the mother of four children, Mrs. E. D. Pritchard and Eugene P. Gum of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Guy Ford and Dr. Earl Gum of Sayre. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
