(By Mrs. A. W. Anderson) One of the most enjoyable events which took place during the month of February was a Valentine party given in honor of the 78th birthday of Mr. Ira Hodgson of Doxey. Friends from Sayre, Elk City, Carter, Marlow and surrounding communities gathered early in the evening to participate in the festivities. Mr. Hodgson built a huge bonfire in the yard for the pleasure of the large crowd of children, who had come to do him honor. They spent the evening playing games and amusing themselves as only children know how. The grown up young folks had dancing. Several of the large rooms having been cleared out to make plenty of room for the square dance, the polka, schotish and the more modern dances; and those who did not care to dance, just visited. At twelve o'clock a sumptuous plate lunch was served by the hostess and enjoyed it, is a foregone conclusion. The guests departed soon after, wishing their host many happy returns of the day. Ira Hodgson was married to Mary J. Emerson, January 5th, 1878, a direct descendant of the famous southern family of Emersons. She has never failed to honor him with a dinner party during the many years of their married life. She says that she enjoys giving them and that everybody is welcome and that she believes that everybody was there this time. At least a few of the guests were Valentines also, one of them was little Bruce Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Hughes of Doxey, and he is the only one who receives a special invitation, and he never fails to accept. Mr. and Mrs. Hodgson have a comfortable home tucked between Timber creek on the west and the hills of the east; surrounded by a grove of large trees. Near the house is an artesian well which flows continually and was once the hope of the people of that locality for an oil well, as it was drilled for that purpose. Mr. Hodgson is the owner of a large alfalfa farm, in which is included the old townsite of Doxey. He enjoys the best of health and says that he is going to live to be one hundred years old and as he is active in the management, harvesting and marketing of his farm products, it is not improbable, and his friends wish for him many years of pleasure and usefulness. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
