A. Miller on B Avenue in this city was the scene of a pleasant social affair Friday night, Feb. 26. A number of his friends planned and successfully executed a surprise party for his 77th birthday. A few relatives and many friends were present, bringing provisions and good things to eat in abundance. A very pleasant evening was spent in singing, talking and partaking of the table delicacies. This was a day long to be remembered by Mr. Miller as evidence of the love and esteem of his friends. Mr. Miller is quite hale and hearty for a man of his years and to a representative of the Leader related some of his life's history. He was born near Springfield, Ill., Feb. 26, 1838. He moved with his parents to Platte Purchase in 1840. Was reared in Buchanan County, Mo., and followed farming as an occupation. In 1863 he moved to Kansas, where he farmed and also taught music in that State and in Missouri, until 1893, when he moved to Eastern Oklahoma, where his wife died. He later returned to Atchison county, Kas., where he married Miss Ada Eastman. In 1908 they came to Beckham county, residing on a farm near town for two years, and after moving in town followed gardening and truck-raising until Oct. 1, 1914, at which time Mr. Miller accepted a position as deliveryman for Hulme's Grocery, and has not lost a day since, which is a remarkable record for a man of his years and the fact that this period has been during the winter months, when the weather is sometimes unpleasant. The Leader extends congratulations to Mr. Miller and wishes him health and many more birthdays such as this one. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
