Still very active and doing her own cooking daily, Aunt Parthenia Ramsey of Sentinel began her second century of life this week after friends gathered at her home in Sentinel Tuesday night to celebrate her 100th birthday. Mrs. Ramsey's husband, the late John Ramsey, died in 1915. He was a civil war veteran who fought on the side of the Confederacy. Mrs. Ramsey has managed her own property and financial affairs since his death. They came to Port, Oklahoma, in 1899 from Cedar Hill, Tex. When Mrs. Ramsey was born in 1839, Texas had won its independence from Mexico only three years earlier, and was not to become a state of the United States until six more years. The months before her birth were marked by the first trip across the Atlantic Ocean of the steamship, The Great Western; Daguerre invented photography; Chicago became a city; Princess Victoria was crowned Queen of Great Britain; Americans were moaning about the "great depression" of 1837; and the Civil War was still 21 years away! Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey moved from Port to Sentinel in 1908, where she lives now, and where more than a hundred friends and the Sentinel band gathered for her birthday party Tuesday. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
