Morgan dmorgan@efn.org ==================================================================== Chapter 16 Davis DeGraffenreid Barber Davis DeGraffenreid Barber, the youngest son of James Monroe and Sarah (Wood) Barber, was born 12 September 1898, Wagoner, Indian Territory. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, Oklahoma in May 1923. He became an ordained minister November 28, 1921.[1]124 Rev. Davis D. Barber married Miss Leta Jane Hollis, 2 August 1923, Mountain View, Oklahoma. Leta was the daughter of Andrew Madison and Martha J. (Kinney) Hollis. Rev. Barber served churches in Wellston, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma City, Erick, and Chickasha, Oklahoma. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant on 3 September 1942, and was sent to the Chaplain school in Cambridge Massachusetts. He served three years, spending one year in England. He left active duty as a Captain, and was promoted to Major in the Reserves, which he served with a short time, leaving April 1, 1953. Rev. Davis D. Barber died of a heart attack 6 August 1964, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. His widow, Leta, born 16 April 1903, Mountain View, Oklahoma Territory, died 12 September 1992, Amarillo, Texas. Obituary of Rev. Davis D. Barber Daily Ardmoreite "Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday for the Rev. Davis D. Barber, 65, who died suddenly early Thursday morning at his home 229 Campbell. "The Rev. Richard T. Hopper will officiate at the rites in the First Baptist Church, assisted by Dr. T. B. Lackey, executive secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, the Rev. Fred Stover of The First Baptist Church, Fox, and Dr. Karl Moore of Ardmore. "Other Baptist ministers of the Ardmore area will serve as bearers. These will be the Rev. L M. Norwood, the Rev. Monroe Palmer, the Rev. Don Clark, the Rev. Gene Ottwell, the Rev. Joe Wiggins and the Rev. Forrest Wicks. All ministers of the Enon Baptist Association have been named as honorary bearers. "Barber was born Sept. 12, 1898, in Wagoner and married Leta J. Hollis, Aug. 2, 1923 at Mountain View. He was graduated at Oklahoma Baptist University and attended Southwest Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. During World War II he was a captain in the Corps of Chaplains, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. "A Baptist minister for 42 years, Barber came to Ardmore 12 years ago as superintendent of missions of the Enon Baptist Association and also was associated with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He came to Ardmore from Haskell County. He had previously served churches in Oklahoma City, Erick, Pauls Valley and Chickasha. "The minister had just returned from a Baptist camp at Glorietta, N.M. Wednesday night, arriving home about midnight. He died about one hour later. "Survivors include the widow: three daughters, Mrs. Don Morgan, Temple, Mrs. George Fyke, Mesquite, Tex. and Mrs. George Honeycutt, Chico, Calif.; a brother, N. L. of Tulsa; two sisters, Mrs. Peal Howard, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. W. C. Holis, Pryor, and 11 grandchildren. Mildred Sue Barber, born 9 March 1925, Wellston, Oklahoma, died 7 July 1986, Temple, Oklahoma, married Hubert Donnell (Markham) Morgan 17 May 1942 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Don is the son of William Ernest Markham and Rebecca Mae Bassett, born 23 July 1922, Canyon, Texas. He was adopted by his step-father in March 1942, French Morgan. He is a veteran of World War II, graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1950. He is now retired and still living in Temple OK, 1998. He married Doris Carlene Hunt 29 July 1988. Carlene born 17 August 1947. His Markham grandparents and his great grandmother, Sarah E. (Upshaw) Markham, are buried in the [2]Post Oak Cemetery near Holland, Bell County, Texas. His great grandfather, [3]John B. Markham, was stabbed to death in Minden, Louisiana in February 1856. Scott Barber Morgan, born 23 July 1956, Ardmore, Oklahoma, married Marsha Newsome 6 August 1977, Temple, OK. Marsha born 8 December 1959. a. Andrew was the son of James M. Hollis and his wife Sara (Satterwhite) Hollis. Martha was the daughter of Elbert Kinney and Agatha Aleatha (Bowen) Kinney.
