(3 Mar 1930, Monday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): "Twenty-Two Years In The Business And Demands For Ice Have Grown Greater Each Year," Says F. M. Gregory, Owner; Two New Storage Houses To Be Built At Carter And Cheyenne This Year. Installation of three new stands of ammonia condensers before hot weather sets in will add approximately eight tons daily to the capacity of the Sayre Ice Company plant. With the extra condensing space the 18 and 12 ton ice compressor machines will produce sufficient ice to care for consumption in the Sayre trade territory, under much less stain than in previous summer seasons. Building New Storage Houses. In addition to the new plant equipment storage houses will be built at Carter and Cheyenne before the summer season opens, according to F. M. Gregory, proprietor. Plans at this time are to erect a combined Filling station and storage-house building at Carter. Besides meeting demands of Ice users in Sayre, the company has permits to sell Ice in ten surrounding towns and all crossroad stores outside of Sayre. Seven of these permits are in Beckham county and the remaining three are Roger Mills county. After storage houses are completed at Carter and Cheyenne, whoever operates the branch houses will handle Ice on a retail plan of buying from the company and selling it on to the consumer. May Eliminate Buying Ice. With the plant making 28 tons daily early in the season it is planned that enough Ice will be put in storage in addition to manufacture to tide over this year without buying from outside firms as in previous seasons, Gregory states. Eight workmen, four at the plant and four on delivery trucks, will be required this summer the same as in other years, he says. Berlin, Grimes, Cheyenne, Sweetwater, Mayfield, Delhi, Spring Creek, Carter and a number of crossroad stores have been stops on the Ice truck routes for several years and will be so again this season. In Ice Business 22 Years. Gregory started in the Ice business 22 years ago, in 1908. He built the present plant two years later. Since that time business has expanded from merely taking care of Sayre city trade to manufacturing and buying Ice for the whole countryside. Trade demands are heavier each year than ever before. New equipment enlarging the capacity of the plant is being installed to meet these increased annual demands, Gregory states. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
