IVESTER (1 Jul 1929, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): J. W. Ivester Selling groceries in the same place for 23 years and raising ten children have been Mr. Ivester's main occupation since coming to this vicinity. He first homesteaded a piece of land upon his arrival in 1898 and until he started in the grocery business in 1906. Ivester came here from Jack county Texas bringing his wife and three oldest children. He was another pioneer and remembers when Sayre was called Doxey. He says he hauled his first load of cotton to Mangum to sell. He has 800 acres of cotton planted this year and said he'd raised cotton ever since he hauled the first load to Mangum. "I have been in the grocery business longer than any other man in Sayre and have had more customers on credit and lost less than any grocery man in Beckham county" states Ivester. Ivester has seven boys and three girls. They have all lived at home until they married, and according to him they were raised in the store. Four of the children have married. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
