A memorial service honoring Rev. James Coleman, grandfather of W. H. Hewlett of this city, will be held in connection with the meeting of the Daviess-McLean association at the First church of Owensboro, Ky., it was learned here. Rev. Coleman served in the ministry in Kentucky the greater part of his life, spending 50 years in that work. He was moderator of the association from 1870 to 1901, with the exception of three years. Honoring the memory of Rev. Coleman, a bronze tablet has been erected in the Hartford Baptist church, Hartford, Ky., bearing the following inscription: "J. S. Coleman, D. D., born February 23, 1827, died March 23, 1904. Preached 50 years, baptized 6,750 people, organized 60 churches, ordained 65 preachers, dedicated 75 churches, married 2,500 couples, raised $200,000 to pay for church buildings, moderator of general association of Kentucky, 20 times, moderator of district association 45 years, pastor of 20 different churches, held numerous revivals in other churches, witnessed 15,000 conventions." Dr. Coleman was born in Beaver Dam, Ky., and was licensed and ordained to preach by the Beaver Dam Baptist Church.
