He was 61. He was born February 10, 1937, in ELK CITY, OKLAHOMA, and graduated from North Texas State University. After college, he taught school for three years in Utah. Mr. Long lived in OKLAHOMA, Texas, Colorado and Utah, before moving to Waterford with his family in 1964. Despite his earlier vagabond nature, once Mr. Long moved to Wateford, he devoted his life to improving the small town, said son Stephen Long of Waterford. "Community was important to him," he said. "Instead of just complaining when the town was going in what he felt was in a bad direction, he got involved." Mr. Long taught at Waterford Elementary School for 29 years. He served on the City Council from 1990 to 1994, including a term as vice mayor from 1990 to 1991....Mr. Long also served as pastor of Wildwood Community Chapel in Greeley Hill for 27 years. He came to Waterford with wife Sarah and their seven children in 1964. The family intended to move on to Oregon, said Stephen Long, but while visiting Sarah's parents in Modesto, Mr. Long stopped by the Stanislaus County Office of Education to investigate teaching opportunities. "He walked out with five job offers," his son said. He was a member of the California Teachers Association... Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Sarah Long of Waterford; children, Stephen Long of Waterford, Shawn Long and Julie Donahue, both of Modesto, Karl Long and Brian Long, both of Fort Collins, Colorado, Carmen Schneider of Fresno and Linda Long-Jensen of Sacramento; and 12 grandchildren.
