PAGE THREE BECKHAM3 CO., OKLAHOMA (BECKHAM COUNTY2 OKLAHOMA, BECKHAM1 CO.OKLAHOMA). Notes JAMES ISAAC BOGGESS-Beckham CO., Oklahoma PIONEER-By Annie BOGGESS WOOD- My father,James Isaac BOGGESS,was born in Madison County,Alabama. He came to Oklahoma in 1898.He filed on land 4 miles east of Carter. In 1900 he returned home, married Tishie Mae RICE in January ,1901 and returned. Will TAYLOR was from the same town and they settled close together.Seanie SMITH and the TABORS came about the same time,as did Bill VAUGHN.Mahala VAUGHN was my father's aunt.Mrs.L.STREET and the WARDS were also early settlers. My mother was 86 years old last January 1st. and Mrs.STREET is older-both might answer some questions.Willie (my husband) has an article his dad wrote about early days, which was published in Sayre or Elk City papers,I think. My parents sold their homestead east of Carter about 1912,and moved to the farm west where Roy and I grew up.Dad was written up as a master farmer in the Daily Oklahoman during the drought of 1934.Willie and I was born before statehood. He in 1903,and I was born in 1905.I graduated from highschool in 1923.I received B.S. and A.B.degrees from Southwest.Willie received M.A.,Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia,in 1933.Willie is finishing his 43 years of teaching in Oklahoma and I,37 years.I taught at Carter 1924,25,26,27, and again in 1942,43.Both have post-graduate work at Oklahoma University,Oklahoma State University and Central State.I met an older lady, who taught in old Carter ,who kept her roll book. She taught some of the JACKSON and some of the BALL girls.Mrs.Annie BRECKENRIDGE and Odie HANKINS (dead).Annie is Mrs.Julia (WOODS)KING'S sister. She lives in California.Mrs.Flossie MOORE,another sister of Willie's mother, went there too.Her address is 707 Columbia,Lawton,Oklahoma.I can't for the life of me remember the little old school teacher's name, but she was related to the SMITH'S who lived south of Merritt and who now live in Elk City.(Kin of Roe SMITH,high school principal.) The deed to the lots in the cemetery where Dad and Fred are buried were from the post office as Wash,Oklahoma.Mother says Wash was over on the river northwest of Carter. The county was Roger Mills.I believe Mamma has the original deed.Oh,yes! One thing more:the community where my folks settled on Saddle Creek was part of POARCH Community.I can remember the township meetings at our home when the men made cartridges. For many years,we had the equipment for making them.Mamma may still have it somewhere.I have heard Mother and Dad tell about the first home in a sod house or half dugout.Dad built a two room house as soon as he could.Mother used to mold butter and sell it in town. She tells of the time she was molding butter. It was in August and so hot the butter was melting. They got into a buggy to drive to Carter.A norther blew up and it was freezing before they got to town, and of coarse there was not proper dress for the freeze.Their first table was the box which held their clothes in shipment.Times were so hard that there was no money for stamps for awhile.
