He was the grandson of Thomas Morrison and Frances Morrison, nee Beard, who were married in Blount County, Tennessee in August 1799. Harvey kept a daily journal/diary the last sixty years of his life. Few survived. Harvey Morrison's earliest surviving--and perhaps, his first--diary covers only Jan 1-Jul 5, 1870. The pages of the latter half of the narrative entries have been cut from the small journal. He came to Texas in, or before, 1869. One family "history" says he came at age 17. His diary shows him departing Austin on January 2, 1870, and arriving in Waco on January 14--a week after the opening of Waco's "new" suspension bridge across the Brazos River. We do not know just how long he resided in Waco. In 1870, he taught school at a Mr. Patterson's and , likely, at a Mr. Sanderson's. He attended "the University" in Waco in 1870. Harvey kept "acts" (cash accounts) of his monetary affairs. His accounts for 1870 remain for the whole of that year and recorded a total income of $248.10 and expenses of $281.05. His only "earned" income seems to have been from his school teaching efforts. His 1872 diary shows that Harvey rented a toll bridge quite near Waco from a man named "Blankenship" for thirty dollars a month and operated a bar/trading post/cafe/barber shop/toll house, etc., on the "creek." He also taught school at the bridge. He did not say over which stream the toll bridge was constructed. Harvey's 1872 diary mentions travelers over the bridge from Mt Calm and Corsicana. My review of historic maps [1878] of McLennan County and records of the Commissioner's Court of that county reveals the toll bridge to have been erected by William Warwick, James Parish and John J. Blankenship on the old Waco/Corsicana Road where that road crossed the Tehuacana Creek [Bridge in Book "A," pages 135, 136; Toll House in Book "A," at page 236, McLennan County Clerk Records, Waco, TX]. There remains only an under the road surface culvert at that site now [1999]; which is located on Bays Road [old Corsicana Road] between Monthie Road and North Pleasant Hill Road. North Pleasant Hill Road crosses Hwy 31 about a mile east of the "Y" where Hwy 84 and Hwy 31 separate east of Waco, TX. Harvey paid Blankenship thirty dollars a month to rent the toll bridge. In September 1872, when he was 24 years of age, Harvey returned to his home in Tennessee to marry his first wife, Esther Angeline Minnis. Prior to her [child-birth?] death August 16, 1878 in Cooke County, Tx, Esther gave birth to Earnest C. (1875--1898) and Bessie E. (August 8, 1878--? m. Marvin Powell). It appears that Harvey left Waco between 1873-1878, moving to near Bowie, TX--where his father, mother, brothers (Lafayette, Caleb "C.C." or "Că", Isaac "Ike", and Thomas) and sisters (Victoria "Vick" Oller, Jane "Jennie" Minnis, and Sarah Elizabeth Hemphill) had recently taken up residence after leaving their eastern Tennessee roots. I have not established when Esther and Harvey moved from the Waco area to Cooke County, TX. I will review the poll tax records at our library in that effort. Harvey married my grandmother, Rebecca Elizabeth Robinson, nee Harvey, in November 1879. [Place unknown] Rebecca already had three children [Sallie Elizabeth (m. Stone), 1869--1935-Erick, OK; Harvey, 1872--Duke, OK; and Ella Inez, 1875--?] To Harvey and Rebecca four children were born in Cooke County, Tx. [1880-1969-Myrtle "Myrtie" May (Shapley)-[Gruver, TX]; 1882-1946-Zenas A. [Peoria, Ill]; 1884--Leo Earl -[Gruver, TX]; and 1886--my father, Orion-[Arapaho, OK]. Rebecca died March 18, 1886--about five weeks after Orion was born. Harvey married his third wife, Josephine (Josie) Newman, April 10, 1887. Josie already had two daughters [Maggie Winder, nee Caviness and Parrilee Underwood, nee Caviness---[Shamrock, TX]. To Harvey and Josie two daughters were born: 1888--Pleaides Lathum [Amarillo, TX] and 1892--Venus Martin [Shamrock, TX]--both, of course, nee Morrison. My recollection is that Orion told me, when I was quite small, that he came to Erick, Oklahoma in 1898 with a herd of horses. I note that the published obituary for Harvey says that he (Harvey) came to Erick in 1907. In any event, later diaries of Harvey show that Zenas, Leo and Orion all were located in and around Erick during the early 1900s. His 1905 diary shows that he lived near enough to Erick to shop and to have cotton ginned there. Harvey's diaries are, by and large, brief, relatively colorless recitations of his activities for the day with frequent comments about the weather conditions. Particularly in his later diaries, he kept rather detailed records of his commercial transactions, i.e., how many brooms he made, to whom he sold [where and how much or how many] his brooms, animals, vegetables, fruits, cotton, etc., and for what price. His entries sometimes evoked more curiosity than he satisfied. Harvey died January 6, 1927, at the home of his daughter, Myrtie May Shapley, in Spearman, TX. He is buried at the Gruver, Texas cemetery. Billie Erick Morrison Colonel, USAF, Retired Born 7/28/1928 at Erick, OK It appears that the first surviving diary written in or near Erick is the partial 1905 one which follows: This is my transcription of the available diary entries by Harvey Morrison for the year 1905.
