(14 Oct 1909, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): In Memoriam. Clyde A. Bates. This afternoon friends of the family gathered at the Christian church to pay their last respects to the memory of a young man, taken by death from his wife and little child and father and mother and the home circle. Only 29 years old, he has suffered more than comes to the ordinary lot of man. Just a few short years ago, in the prime of life, he heard his country's call and enlisted in the army and served in the Phillipines (sic), from whence he returned scarcely alive, ever since which time he has suffered from ill health and finally succumbing to Pneumonia on yesterday. Rev. Sebe Thomas spoke the words of comfort to the sorrowing friends and relatives, who repairing to the cemetery, laid away the mortal remains, of one who, indeed, gave up his life to his country where he shall sleep until the lass roll call. The Democrat extends condolence to the family in their sorrow.
