FRANKLIN (3 Oct 1930, Friday, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services for B. F. Brown, 88, veteran Civil War soldier and father of Mrs. J. E. Standifer and Sam Brown, of this city, were held at eleven o'clock this morning at the home of Mrs. Standifer at 502 West Broadway. Rev. E. C. Webb, pastor of the Broadway Methodist Episcopal Church, South officiated. Final rites will be read Saturday afternoon at Harpersville, Texas, where burial will be made with the body of Mr. Brown being laid beside that of his wife and three children, it was announced. Mr. Brown died in a city hospital late Thursday afternoon following a prolonged illness. Since the death of his wife, seven years ago, Mr. Brown has made his home with his children and for the past two years had been with Mrs. Standifer and Dr. Standifer here. Considering his age, Mr. Brown has been quite active until four months ago when he was forced to discontinue daily walks and attendance at church. Born In Louisiana. Mr. Brown was reared on a plantation in Louisiana. He was born January 28, 1842, at East Felliciemma Parish, Louisiana. He was reared by a brother, both of his parents having died when he was a boy. He graduated from a military academy in Nashville, Tennessee, which is now known as Vanderbilt University. At the beginning of the Civil War Mr. Brown left the academy and as captain of a regiment fought in four important battles. They were the Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Chickmuga, the Battle of Missionary Ridge and the Battle of Shiloh. He was captain of his regiment during the entire four years of the war under General Sidney Johnson and Colonel Jeb Stuart. Mr. Brown went to West Texas in 1871 and settled near Breckenridge. One year later he was married to Miss Lucy Russell. They lived in Texas until ten years ago when they moved to Lubbock, Tex., where Mrs. Brown died. Mr. Brown became a member of the M. E. Church South during the Civil War and for a number of years served on the board of stewards of the M. E. Church of Eureka, Tex. Special Choir. A choir which during the services this morning was composed of Mrs. J. C. Weaver, Mrs. W. O. Gibbs, Mrs. A. T. Ansley, Mrs. M. E. Perry, Guy Woodman and A. G. Steele. Mrs. Jack Cummings sang a hymn. The local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy paid tribute to the aged Southern Soldier this morning when the chapter was represented by Mrs. G. E. Martin and Mrs. F. H. Ward. Pall bearers were: W. W. Blackburn, W. H. Hewlett, Henry Tyler, W. C. Thomas, A. G. Steele and E. Y. Bradfield. Besides Mrs. Standifer and Sam Brown, three sons survive Mr. Brown. They are: H. O. Brown of Sayre; H. L. Brown, of Cisco, Tex.; and F. D. Brown, of Lubbock, Texas. Mrs. Standifer and Mr. Brown of Sayre accompanied the body to Harpersville, leaving on the train shortly afternoon. Mrs. Standifer will return to Elk City immediately after interment is made. (5 Oct 1930, Sunday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services for B. F. Brown, father of H. O. Brown of this city were held at eleven o'clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. J. E. Standifer in Elk City. Brown was 88 at the time of his death. He was a veteran Civil War soldier. Death came to the Elk City man following a prolonged illness of nearly four months. He was confined to the Tisdal Hospital in Elk City at the time of his death. Besides H. O. Brown, the deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. J. E. Standifer of Elk City; H. L. Brown of Cisco, Texas; Sam Brown of Elk City and F. D. Brown of Lubbock, Texas. Following the funeral service Friday the body was placed on the train to be taken to Harpersville, Texas, where burial will be made. H. O. Brown and Mrs. Standifer accompanied the body to the final resting place.
