(29 Nov 1918, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Reported Killed. Private James F. Bass of Elk City and John H. Lawrence of Sayre were reported killed in action on western front last Tuesday. These boys may have lost their lives a month ago, and we will probably hear of others who have lost their lives, as government reports will drag along for months. - Southwestern Press, Elk City. Private Bass was formerly a printer and at one time worked for several months in The Carter Express office, when Thomas T. Waggoner was editor. (30 Jan 1919, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Allie Lawrence, widow of John H. Lawrence, killed in France, has received the following letter, confirming the death of her husband: Mrs. Allie Lawrence, Sayre, Oklahoma. MY DEAR MADAM: I will take the liberty of answering your letter of November 19th, 1918, addressed to St. Carman, who is no longer with this organization. I regret that I must confirm the report that your husband was killed in action on October 8th, 1918. He was only a few feet from me when he was killed. At the time we were trying to take a German machine gun nest and were subjected to a terrific fire. Your husband must have raised his head slightly because he was shot right between the eyes and never uttered a sound after he was hit. This took place southeast of the Machault in the Campagne sector. I am glad to say that your husband's conduct prior to his death was splendid and that he met his death like a brave soldier that he was. Permit me to extend my deepest sympathy to you. I am sincerely yours, E. H. MCMANUS, Captain. 141st Infantry. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
