Another lad has "gone out west" for his country. Jesse McCartey (sic) was born Sept. 13, 1895; died Oct. 15, 1918. He entered the army Feb. 23, 1918; sailed for France July 1st; has been on the firing line since Aug. 1st. Mr. McCarty was a Machine gunner, serving his country in the front rank. In writing home he told of the awful battles in which he had fought, the nights he had fought in the rain, mud and cold, the privation he had undergone for America. Mr. McCarty was converted at the age of sixteen. He lived a Christian life for the past seven years; laboring always for his church, his community and his fellowman. He died as he lived - a brave patriotic Christian man. (7 Nov 1918, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): In another column we printed announcement of the death in France of Jesse McCarty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCarty. The young man was a good boy and a devoted son. He enlisted in the army in February and sailed for France in July. He was soon in the trenches and did some brave fighting for his country and by his letters and the word of friends he did it cheerful, bravely and honorably. He was stricken with tubercular pneumonia and died October 15th, 1918 at the age of twenty-three years. Word was received by the parents last week. The Democrat joins the host of friends who offer their sincere sympathy. The parents laid upon the alter of freedom the greatest sacrifice possible and all honor is due them and their brave departed son. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
