(22 May 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): SI SEARCY DIED OF BLOOD POISON FOLLOWING WOUND Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Snyder received word last November of the death of Si Searcy, whom they had raised since a boy, but they have been unable to hear anything about how he died or any particulars at all, though they have tried in many ways. Ernest Baggs received a letter the past week from a friend in Germany who wrote: "I can't tell so much about when Searcy died, but I know the cause of his death. On October 29th we were camped on a road just in the edge of the town of Roumagne, and had our kitchen in front of a battery of 155 on long rifles. "We were in a place subject to cross fire so one day just at meal time we were all eating and sitting around in the open enjoying the nice warm sunshine and not expecting any shell fire, when an '88' came in from our right and hit in about eight feet of the stove, killing two medical corps boys instantly and wounded Searcy and eight more men. "Searcy, I think, was hit in the right leg, right below the knee. I don't think he was hit any other place. He was taken to the hospital and as much as I can find out he died from blood poison. "We are going to Trier in the morning and if I can find out any more particulars about it after I get back to the company I will let you know. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
