(6 Oct 1921, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): ALBERT L. TURNER BURIED IN DEMPSEY CEMETERY. Albert L. Turner, who was one of the first of the Roger Mills county boys to enlist, and who was killed in France, October 25th, 1918, was buried in the Dempsey cemetery (Roger Mills County) last Sunday afternoon. The funeral crowd was estimated to have been between two and three thousand people. The funeral was in charge of the American Legion Post of Sayre assisted by the Legion boys from Cheyenne and Strong City. Rev. Gibble of the Christian Church of Sayre preached the funeral sermon. This has been said by many to have been the largest funeral attendance ever in Roger Mills county. (13 Oct 1921, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The funeral services of Albert L. Turner, killed in France on October 25th, 1918, were held at the Dempsey cemetery on Sunday afternoon last, with the largest attendance of any funeral ever held in Roger Mills county. As mentioned last week, the body reached this city a week previous, but was held here to allow arrangements to be made for a full military funeral, which was in charge of the Sayre post of the American Legion. The funeral cortege leaving this city on Sunday noon was composed of about fifty automobiles, conveying the parents of the deceased soldier, members of the Sayre post American Legion, the Sayre band and a large number of friends. All along the road to Dempsey autos were being added to the procession, and by the time it reached there numbered well toward 100. At the cemetery it was found that delegations of American Legion boys from Cheyenne and Strong City had already assembled, while there was an almost endless string of automobiles bringing friends from Berlin, Grimes, Sweetwater and other sections, the total crowd being variously estimated anywhere between two and three thousand, twenty-five hundred probably being nearer a correct figure. Rev. Gibble of the Christian church of this city, preached the funeral sermon, while the military services at the grave were in charge of Sayre Post, with Rev. Z. E. Twitty, of the Baptist church, acting as chaplain. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
