ALLEY 10 year old and Lavine MATTHEWS,11 years old victims of a tragic bicycle automobile collision Tuesday at Carter were held Wednesday afternoon at the Carter Baptist Church with Rev.C.E.BRASWELL,pastor officiating. The ALLEY boy was buried in the Carter cemetery.Burial for the Matthews boy was in the Post cemetery. The MATTHEWS boy was killed instantly and the ALLEY boy died a little more than 12 hours following the accident Tuesday morning. They were riding the same bicycle,racing with two other boys on bicycles when they turned into the path of the automobile traveling north on state highway No.34 through Carter. Gordon PRESLEY,driver of the automobile,was held blameless in the accident.With five other members of the Reed baseball team,he was enroute to Clinton to play in the district tournament. In the car with him were Paul THOMPSON,Coleman THOMPSON and Clifton NELSON,all of Reed,George WRIGHT of Granite,and Wilman HUGHES of Vinson.The driver of the automobile swerved his car into the ditch at the side of the road but was unable to avoid stricking them. The MATTHEWS boy was killed instantly,suffering concussion of the brain and deep lacerations about the back and legs.He was the son of Mrs.Oma MATTHEWS,a widow. Mrs.C.C.ALLEY,mother of the second victim of the accident,also a widow.The boys father was killed about two years ago in an automobile accident in the eastern part of the state,leaving the mother in care for the large family.
