He had made his home in Elk City for the past two years and was79 years of age. Carleton was born in Ray county Missouri and married Pauline Sims in Elk City in the year 1906. He filed on a farm in 1899 seven miles northwest of Canute and was in business at Clinton for most of his life. Mr. Carleton was a member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife at 102 North Walker, a brother Guy M. Carleton of Chilicothe Mo and six nephews; R. V. Carleton Dallas Tx, Evans Carleton Kansas City, MO; R. B. Cowherd, Hammon, V. M. Cowherd Elk City, V. A. Cowherd, Elk City, and E. C. Cowherd of Chula Vista Calif. Funeral services will be held Tuesdayat 2 pm in the First Christian Church with Rev. J. Cecil Coover officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery with Martin-Hullum funeral directors in charge Elk City Daily News CARLETON, Pauline Sims B 1878 D 18 Nov 1951 M 1908 Clinton Cemetery Pauline Sims Carleton, 102 N Walker, died Sunday after an illness of three years duration. She 73 years of age. Born in Bonham, Texas, she married Leslie M. Carleton in 1908 in Elk City and moved to Custer county in that year. Mr. Carleton preceded her in death just six days ago on November 17. Mrs. Carleton is survived by two sisters, Miss Sims of Elk City and Mrs. Frank Ragin, Panama, OK., a brother R. E. Sims of Elk City, a nephew, Harry B. Roberts Salt Lake City, Utah; and other nephews and nieces. Funeral services are to be held Tuesday, November 20 at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church with Rev. A. E. Houner officiating. Burial is in the Clinton Cemetery wity the Martin-Hullium funeral directors in charge. Cowherd died last Thursday evening, September 6th at her home northeast of Elk City. Funeral Servicxes were held at the home on Saturday morning and were attended by a very large crowd of her neighbors and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Williams of Canute, she having been a member of the M. E. Church South since she was a young girl. Interment was made in Fairlawn Cemetery. Alpha O. Carleton was born in Ray County, Missouri, November 27th, 1870 and was married to W. C. Cowherd on March 20th 1895 at New Hope Missouri. They came to Oklahoma in the spring of 1899 and was living on the old homestead when she passed away. Her husband and four sons survive her; the four boys being Roy, Vin, Earl and Virgil; also her mother Mrs. F. M. Carleton who has been living with her. Mrs. Cowherd was a good christian woman, and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances who grive because of the loss of one they loved and respected.The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of all in this sad hour. Cowherd, 74-year-old prominent pioneer farmer who died shortly after Thursday midnight at his home northeast of Elk City, will be held here at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Fairlawn cemetery Rev. L. D. Hawkins of Rocky, long-time friend of the family, will give the funeral sermon. Rev Joe S. Strother, local paster, will preside at the services with Rev Paul W. Evans, Canute Methodist minister, assisting. Active Pall bearers will include Benny Harper, Ray Waters, Orville Rowlan, Homer Thompson, Luther Tunnell and Nath Bonney. Honorary pall bearers will be GeorgeThompson, John Leeper, Jim Mayberry, Juhn Wray, John Elliott and G. O. Spencer. Mr. Cowherd had been a member of the Methodist churches of Elk City and Canute for many years. He had lived in this section since 1898, coming to Oklahoma from Missouri. He was born June 3, 1867, at Campbellsville, Ky., and was married March 20, 1895 at Richmond, Mo., to Alpha Carleton, who preceded him in death. Surviving him are four sons and one sister. The sons are Roy B. of Hammon, Vincil M. of Elk City, route 6, Earl C. of Chula Vista, Calif., and Virgil A. Cowherd. the sister is Mrs. James L. Bowen of Campbellsville, Ky. Oct 11, 1985 Elk City Daily News Cowherd Elizabeth Ann Dye b 31 Jan 1905 Elk City d 10 Oct 1985 Elk City Funeral serrvices for Elizabeth Cowherd will be conducted from the Martin funeral Chapel Saturday, Oct 12 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Roy Rowlan and Rev. J. C. Curry officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Cowherd was born Jan. 31, 1905 in Elk City and died Thursday at the age of 80. She was raised on a farm in the Pixlee community and graduated from the Elk City High School. She attended Southwestern State Teachers College in Weatherford. After achieving her teaching certificate she taught at the Elk Creek School just southeast of Elk City. She was married to Virgil Cowherd March 29, 1925 in the Methodist Church Parsonage in Elk City. Her marriage has lasted for over 60 years. She worked many years in the Methodist Guild where she served as president. She was a member of the Iris Garden Club. She worked with her husband in the Southwest Motor Company for 26 years, retiring from the endeavor in1972. She had been in ill health since that time. Survivors include her husband Virgil of the home; three sisters, Zelma Dunn of Elk City, Mrs. Nora Irene Preston of Bonita, CA., and Mrs. Lena Mae Coates of Centralia, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and five brothers. The family requests that donations be made to the United Methodist Church in her memory. Rowlan officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery. Mr. Cowherd was born just northeast of Elk City on Aug 26, 1904 and died Monday at the age of 86. He attended Hager school and then began farming. He was married to Elizabeth Dye on March 29, 1925 in the Methodist Church Parsonage here in Elk City. He continued farming after his marriage and then began employment with Armour and Company. Besides Elk City, he worked for the companyin Ft. Worth Tx., Great Band, Ks., and Woodward. He came back to Elk City, where he began his career in the automotive supply business. He oprated the business until his retirement in1972. His wife. Elizabeth, preceded him in heath on Oct. 10, 1985. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for several years, serving as president in 1962. He later joined the Rotary Club of which he was a current member. He was a member of the United Methodist Church here in Elk City. Survivors include three brotherss: Roy Cowherd of Ardmore, Vin Cowherd of Elk City, and Earl Cowherd of Chula Vista, Ca. also several nieces and nephews. Blanche Temple Cowherd was born Aug 29, 1901 northwest of Canute and died July 12 in her home at the age of 84. She had lived in Washita County all her life. She married Vin Cowherd on 31 Dec 1919 in Elk City and they lived on their farm 56 years until 1980 when they moved to Elk City where she was living at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband Vin Cowherd of the home, three brothers, Ray Mayberry and Clarence Mayberry, both of Elk City, and Allen Mayberry of Seattle, Wash. one sister Mrs. Helen Hager of Elk City, five nephews and four nieces. She was preceded in death by one brother. The family wishes memorials to be made to Community Hospital. Vincil Melvin Cowherd was born March 12, 1898 in Ray County, Missouri and died earlly Sunday at the age of 94. He moved to Oklahoma at a young age and attended Hager, Pixley and Cottonwood Schools. Vin was married to Blanche Mayberry on December 31, 1919 in Elk City. They established their first home in Washita County and then moved to a farm Northeast of Elk City where they lived and farmed until retirement in 1970. They moved to Elk City in 1982 where they have lived since. Mrs. Cowherd preceded him in death on July 12, 1986. Vin was a very active member of the United Methodist Church. Suurvivors include two brothers, Roy Cowherd of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Earl Cowherd of Chula Vbista, California. Also several nieces and nephews. Besides his vife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Cowherd. Cowherd, Dorothea L. [Harland] b 1 Oct. 1923 Frankfort, Indiana d 2 Apr 1992 Elk City Funerla services for Dorothea Cowherd were held at 11:00a.m., Monday, April 6th, in the Savage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Rowlan, officiating. Dorothea L. Cowherd was born on October 2, 1923 in Frankfort, Indiana, the daughter of E. Vernon and Anna B. Harland, and died April 2,1992 in the Cummunity Hospital of the age of 68. Dorothea graduated from highschool in Frankfort, Indiana. She married Loren V. Cowherd on Dec. 3, 1948 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Mr. and Mrs. Cowherd moved to Elk Citiy in 1968, and in 1972 they purchased Southwest Motor Supply. For the last 19 years, Mrs. Cowherd worked at the United Methodist Church Thrift Shop and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Cowherd is survived by her husband, Loren of Elk City; three daughters; Carleys Sue poole, and her husband, Edward, of Elk City, Dye-Anna Cowherd of Elk City and Cara Lee Campbell, and her husband, Kirk, of Hobart; two sons; Torrance Cowherd of Elk City and Phil Cowherd, and his wife, Sharon, also of Elk City; eight ghrandchildren: Michael, Jeffery, Cody, Jessica, Brandon, Brad, Ryan and Travis; one brother, Phil Harland, of California; and three sisters: Phylis Harland, Evalene Wolf and Berea Harland, all of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Savage Funeral Home. Loren Vernon Cowherd was born October 28, 1928 in Elk City to Earl and Loleta (Dye) Cowherd and died Saturday at the age of 65. He was married to Dorothea Harland on December 3, 1948. Loren entered military service in 1947 and served his country in the US Air Force until his discharge in 1968.They moved to Elk City where in 1972 he purchased the Southwest Motor Supply. Mrs. Cowherd preceded him in death in April of 1992. Survivors include five children, Carleys Poole and her husband Edward of Elk City, Torrance Cowherd of Elk City, Dye-Anna Cowherd of Elk City, Cara Lee Campbell and her husband Kirk of Hobart and Phil Cowherd and his wife Sharon of Elk City, one brother Robert Cowherd and his wife Midge ofChula Vista Ca. his step-mother Nedra Cowherd of Chula Vista CA, eight grandchildren, Michael, Jeffery, Brad, Ryan, Travis, Cody, Jessica and Brandon.
