The people of Carter as well as the citizens of Retrop and other communities were greatly shocked and grieved last Saturday afternoon when the sad news went out that Miss Thelma Clearman of Retrop had died suddenly from the effects of poison. Miss Clearman was well known throughout the county, having taught school at Highway and other places and had thus made many friends in these as well as in her home community. She was also well known by many of the Carter people and her friends everywhere are grieved to hear of her sad and tragic death. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Clearman of Retrop one of the most highly respected families in the country and the family has the deepest sympathy of everybody throughout the country wherever they are known. The funeral services were held at Retrop Sunday afternoon, Rev. Ellis, an old neighbor and close friend of the family, having charge of same. A large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives were on the sad occasion to pay their respects to one they had learned to love as a friend and teacher. This has been one of the saddest tragedies to have happened in this part of the country and has caused much sorrow among the people of Retrop, and other communities. The heart broken parents have the sympathy of all in the loss of their beautiful and talented young daughter. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
