Her mother died when she was only 3 months and nine days old, but she was reared by a kind stepmother. Her father died July 20, 1915. She joined the Methodist Episcopal church when a girl, and remained a faithful teacher and follower of our Lord. When twenty one years old she was united in marriage to John W. Conrad, who died July 15, 1913. To this union were born four girls and seven boys. The youngest daughter Mary Almada, died October 7, 1896. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad and family came by covered wagon to Oklahoma in October 1905 and settled on what is now the family homestead at Rankin, near the new town of Reydon. Of the children, Chester, (recently from Illinois), Virgil Conrad, Mrs. Daisy Hines and Orville Conrad, now reside at Reydon; Judge Ross Conrad at Cheyenne, Oklahoma; Mrs. Rosie Finch at Atascadera, Calif.; Mrs. Orpha Goehring at Arkansas City, Kansas; James at Sayre, Oklahoma; Dr. Ulra E. Conrad at Decatur, Texas; and the youngest, John Junior at Norman, Oklahoma. Grandma Conrad leaves to mourn her departure ten children and thirty-two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother, Orlando Burner of Hollywood, Florida; three half brothers and four half sisters, all of Illinois, except Edgar Burner of Kentucky; besides many friends. And everyone who knew her was a friend of Mrs. Conrad. As one of the original organizers of the M. E. Church in this community, Mrs. Conrad has been very active in all its branches of work - Sunday School, Ladies Aid and Missionary Society, and as deeply interested in the Epworth League as any of the young people. Interment was made at the Rankin, White Rose cemetery. All the children were present except Rosa Finch of California, who spent last summer at her bedside. On Saturday afternoon, February 15, 1930, an impressive service was conducted by Rev. French Lancaster at the little church she so devotedly served, and now a mound of beautiful flowers marks the last resting place of her earthly tabernacle. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
