Abernathy of Elk City died at his home in that city Sunday morning, Dec. 30th, of abscess of the stomach. He was stricken down while up town Saturday afternoon before his death and while he seemed to rest right well through the night Saturday night he was taken worse about eight o'clock Sunday morning and only lived a short while thereafter. Although he had been in right poor health for some months, yet his family and friends had not thought of his condition being as serious as it was before he had the fatal attack on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Abernathy was a brother-in-law of the EXPRESS editor and once lived in the county four miles east of Carter and had a number of relatives and a large number of old friends in that part who were grieved to learn of his death. The remains were interred in the Elk City cemetery Monday afternoon. The funeral was held at the residence, a large crowd of relatives and friends being present. The funeral rites were conducted by Rev. Hamilton, pastor of the Baptist Church of Elk City. All of the Cain boys and their wives and a number of friends from this part of the country attended the funeral. (3 Jan 1924, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): S. M. ABERNATHY DEAD. S.
