Davis, residing across the river, died very suddenly last Friday night of heart trouble. Mr. Davis was an old settler, and was well known and had many friends throughout the county. He was known by many people as "Cyclone" Davis. Interment was made at the Carter cemetery, a large crowd of friends and relatives being present. (18 Mar 1920, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Obituary of Rev. A. S. Davis Rev. A. S. Davis was born in Maryland, Sept. 10, 1848, and departed this life Feb. 20, 1920. He had been a resident of Oklahoma for several years, residing three miles south and three west of Sayre at the time of his death. Rev. Davis had been in the work of the ministry for twenty-five years. His remains were laid to rest in the Carter cemetery on Monday, Feb. 23d, the funeral services being in charge of Rev's G. W. Nichols and A. J. Roberts. At a prayer meeting held at his home prior to his death, he requested that these gentlemen hold the services (having anticipated his death) saying that his wife would show them the scripture he wished them to use on that occasion. The scripture was Acts 11:24. A large crowd attended the funeral. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters and a host of other relatives and friends to grieve his departure. The writer joins others with sympathy for the bereaved family. (I want to beg pardon of the relatives and friends of Brother Davis for his obituary not appearing sooner, as I did not know that I was expected to attend to this matter.) A. J. Roberts. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
