(24 Aug 1923, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): The people of Carter were grieved to hear that Mr. J. J. England, one of our most prominent citizens had suffered a stroke of paralysis about three o'clock Sunday afternoon. He was up town when he was stricken down suddenly. He was carried home and physicians summoned and it was soon learned that he was in a serious condition. His entire left side being affected. Mrs. England was so overcome from the shock of her husbands serious condition that she was taken ill and for a day or two was in a right serious condition herself. However she is better now and their many friends and relatives are strongly in hopes that both will soon recover and be able to be out again. (7 Sep 1923, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): J. J. England, one of Carter's most prominent citizens and business men, died at his home here Wednesday afternoon. He had been ill with paralysis for over two weeks and it was known from the first that his condition was very serious. At times since the first stroke however he would seem to improve a little and his physician and relatives would hold out some hope that he might fight off the ravages of the disease and get up again. Everything that could be done in the way of medical skill and careful nursing was did (sic) to stay the onslought of the disease but all of which only stayed off the final result temporarily. Mr. England was one of the most popular citizens and business men of Carter, being connected with his son, L. R. England, in the England Mercantile Co. He moved here from Port some eight or ten years ago, and has made a business success from the start. He and his son suffered a burn out since going into business here but this did not deter them from reentering their chosen profession again and the last time built up a larger business than ever before. Mr. England was of a very jovial nature which made him very popular with old and young. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church and the remains laid to rest in the Carter cemetery Thursday. (20 Sep 1923, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Obituary. Mr. Joe England was born at Meaderville, West Virginia, Jan., 14, 1867. Later, his family moved to Illinois and from there to Texas. Mr. and Mrs. England were united in marriage January 13, 1888, in Texas. They moved to Port, Oklahoma, 25 years ago where Mr. England was in the mercantile business. Seven years ago they moved with their family to Carter and since then Mr. England and his son, Lee, have been in the mercantile business here. To this union were born three children, two boys and one girl, the older boy passing to the great beyond when two years old, leaving two children, Lee and Lennie England who later became Mrs. Clarence Loomis. Mr. England was converted when a boy and joined the Christian church and later had his membership transferred to the Methodist church. Mr. England made friends everywhere, not by his overly popularity but by his calm, devoted and grateful life which he lived. His life was a total success both in his home and business and our words could never express just those thoughts we wish to give him. Mr. England was a devoted father, and grandfather, and prized his friends. He gave his compliments to the living as well as the dead; if he thought well of you, you were told so right then and not after you were laid away under the sod. Tears must and will fall when we think of him. Mr. England is survived by his devoted wife and two children, Lee England and Mrs. Clarence Loomis and his only sister, Mrs. D. C. Osborn of Goree, Texas. May God bless and strengthen these bereaved ones and may the years live to tell in these lives the devoted life their husband, father and brother lived and instilled here on earth. Interment was made in the Carter cemetery in the family lot beside his brother, the late William England, of Carter. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
