Mr. Jim Gilbert of Carter, of whom we made mention last week as being in a very serious condition as a result of blood poison in his leg, died at the hospital in Elk City, Saturday evening about seven o'clock. Mr. Gilbert suffered a great deal during his illness, which was little over a week. He first stuck a splinter through his shoe and into his foot while working at the Davis Garage. And although the splinter was removed, the wound gave him so much pain that he could get no sleep, and soon developed into blood poison. An operation was performed in the hopes of stopping the ravages of the terrible disease, but the effects of this seemed to be only temporary relief as his condition continued to get worse until Saturday he was carried to the hospital, but died the same day. Mr. Gilbert's sister, Miss Mollie, and his mother, both came up from Texas and were here at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and three children, the two oldest being girls, Mary and Lizzie. The youngest, Howard, is a boy. The funeral and burial were at the Carter cemetery Sunday afternoon, funeral rites being conducted by Rev. B. D. Griggs of Carter. A very large crowd was present to pay their last respects to their friend and neighbor. Mr. Gilbert was one of our most popular citizens, and being possessed of a very agreeable disposition, we don't believe he had an enemy in the world. When a town and community loses a citizen possessed of such noble traits as he, it is a loss that all will feel and regret. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family and other relatives. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
