(29 Jun 1923, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): The people of Carter and this part of the country were grieved to learn this week of the death of Rev. R. E. Locks (sic), former pastor of the Carter Methodist Church. Mr. Locks died at the home of his mother at Zephor (Zephyr, Brown Co), Texas, June 14th. He had been in real bad health for several months and had undergone an operation at Oklahoma City about two months ago. He also stayed at a sanitarium at Temple, Texas, for awhile, but getting no better had gone on to the home of his mother at Zephor. (5 Jul 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): The many friends of Rev. R. E. Lock (sic) were shocked to learn of his death last Thursday. Rev. Locke had been in very poor health for some time and the last word received here by his friends were that he was on his way to a hospital in Temple, Texas, where he intended undergoing an operation. Thursday we learned of his death on June 14th, at his mothers home in Nephor (sic), Tex. Rev. Locke was a man of strong personality and was loved by all who knew him. While in Carter, he was not only a minister but was a real citizen and took interest in everything uplifting to Carter and community. Rev. Locke was married to Miss Hettie Wilkins of Marietta, Oklahoma, last December and our deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Locke as she has to give up such a devoted husband so early in their married life. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
