Ross, age 68, died at his home here in Carter about seven o'clock on Tuesday evening of this week, of pneumonia. He had been taken ill several weeks with the flu which terminated in pneumonia, and although his condition had been considered serious since the development of the dreaded pneumonia, yet on different occasions he was reported to be better but on the night previous to his death he made a change for the worse and continued growing weaker to the end. While Mr. Ross was sick a special trained nurse was employed to care for him and everything that could be done in the way of careful nursing and medical skill failed to stay the ravages of the disease. Mr. Ross was an early settler in this part of the country he and his family having lived on their farm southwest of Carter. A few years ago he decided he was getting too old to attend to his farm regularly so they rented their farm out and moved to Carter. The deceased left behind to mourn his passing away his wife, three sons, mother, one brother and other relatives and a host of close friends. Two of his sons, Robert and Walter have been in the drugstore business here for a number of years, while the oldest son, Carney, is farming out southwest of town. His mother is still living, but is very feeble, down at Stamford, Texas. A brother, also living at Stamford, came in to see him while he was sick and was here for the funeral. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Thursday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. T. J. Melton, after which interment was made in the Carter cemetery. (18 Feb 1927, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): W. B. Ross, for the past 26 years, one of the outstanding pioneer figures in our community passed peacefully to eternal rest at 7:15 P.M. Jan. 11, 1927. William B. Ross, son of R. N. and Pauline Ross, was born at Summerville, Ala., Sept. 15, 1859. The family moved later to Lafayette county, Miss. At the age of 13 years he was converted and joined the Presbyterian Church, with his only brother, Walter. In 1887 he moved to Dublin, Texas, where he met and won the heart and hand of Miss Elizabeth Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Reed. To this union were born three sons who were at his bedside when death called to him. The sons are: Carnie, Walter and Robert, all of Carter. In 1901 he, with his family, came to Oklahoma and settled on a claim near where the town of Carter now stands, where he farmed and made friends with the pioneers until 1920, when he moved to the town of Carter where he lived until the time of his passing. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
