Simpson, one of Carter's most prominent and respected citizens, died about 9 o'clock, Wednesday night of this week, at his home here in Carter. He was born in Hardeman County, Tennessee, on June 3, 1853, and died on June 8, 1927, being 74 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Simpson had been in bad health for many months and he and his devoted wife went down to the southern coast country of Texas and spent the past winter in the hopes of benefitting his health which had been failing for some time even before they went to the coast the last time. However while down in that country he became worse and returned home before all of the cold weather was over. After arriving back in Carter he continued to grow worse and underwent an operation in order to gain relief but his condition was so critical that no permanent relief was obtained. For some time his relatives have realized that his condition was very critical but he himself seemed to believe that he would overcome the disease and soon be up again. Mr. Simpson had been a resident of Carter for many years and was popular with all as everybody loved "Grandpa" Simpson. Having been in the grocery store with his son for many years he was widely known throughout this part of the country, and his numerous friends were sincerely hoping that he would regain his health again. The deceased leaves a loving companion and three children, a number of grand-children and great grand-children to mourn his passing away. The children, Mr. W. S. Simpson, Mrs. Claudia Cooper and Mrs. Tom Brownlee. All are living here and were with him almost constantly during his last illness. The funeral was held at the Carter cemetery on Thursday afternoon, Rev. J. E. Osborn, having charge of the funeral services. Besides his relatives a large crowd of friends were present to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased who had lived such a worthy and useful life, and who had by such a life gained the true friendship of so many. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
