Several months ago she was taken with the measles and had not fully recovered when she was stricken with appendicitis. She was taken to Mangum the latter part of the week and operated on Tuesday evening, but too late to save her. The body was shipped to Carter from Mangum Wednesday morning. A large concourse of friends gathered at the Methodist church where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Joe Keith at four o'clock, after which the remains were taken to their last resting place in Carter cemetery. Miss Jewell leaves behind, besides her immediate family and relatives, a host of loved and loving friends to mourn her departure in the rosy bloom of youth and hope. But in the darkest days there is a comfort, and behind the blackest cloud there shines the light of a friendly star. May the cloud rift reveal its beauties and lead the stricken ones to its blest repose. (18 Jul 1913, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Little Jewell Smith, daughter of Bro. and sister J. H. Smith, was born May 9th, 1899. Departed this life July 1st, 1913, in the hospital at Mangum, Okla., from an operation for appendicitis, age 14 years one month and 23 days. Her funeral was preached at the M. E. Church at Carter by the writer, and her remains were laid to rest in the Carter cemetery to await the trumpit (sic) call. Little Jewell was a bright loving and obedient child. She leaves to mourn her death, 4 dear brothers, five loving sisters, a father and mother and a host of friends. But we feel that our loss is Heavens gain. While little Jewell was a beautiful flower blooming in the home for 14 short Summers to make the garden beautiful and the home lovely now she has been plucked from the parents stalk and left a scar which only God can heal. (Carter Cemetery lists as Velma Jewell Smith.) --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
