P. Smith Mr. William P. Smith died at his home here in Carter on Monday, July 9th, after an illness of several months duration. Mr. Smith was 68 years old at the time of his death. He had had to give up his work about nine months ago and had been confined to his room the greater part of the time since, suffering intensely at times. Mr. Smith and his wife moved to Carter from Clarendon, Texas, only a few years back, but since that time they have made many friends among the Carter people, friends who will miss Mr. Smith as a friend and neighbor and who deeply sympathize with Mrs. Smith and other relatives their loss. The funeral services were held at the Smith home on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Dewey Squires, Pastor of the Baptist Church, preaching the funeral sermon, after which the Masonic Lodge of Carter, at the request of the Masonic Lodge of Clarendon, Texas, took charge of the services and remains were laid to rest in the Carter cemetery under the rites of the Masonic order. A large crowd was present both at the home and cemetery. Mr. Smith leaves a devoted wife and three daughters, Mrs. C. C. Alley of Carter, Mrs. Myrtle Tate of Carter, Mrs. Mae Stice of Hamlin, Texas, also a number of grand children, one of which Raymond Nance, he and Mrs. Smith raised since childhood. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church July 10. Interment in Carter cemetery.
