Spencer, father of Sam Spencer, of Carter, had died very suddenly that evening of acute indigestion. Mr. Spencer was up town that afternoon when he was taken ill, and after going to the drug store and getting some medicine he rode on out to the Spencer home just south of town. After getting home and laying down he felt better for a while and engaged in conversation with his folks. However he did not feel well long for in a short while he was taken deathly ill very suddenly and sank rapidly until the end. Mr. Spencer was popular with everybody here. He was a friend to all and his passing away was a severe shock to the people of Carter and surrounding country. The remains were laid away at the Spring Creek cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, his wife having preceeded him in death on Mar. 1, 1911, and was buried in that cemetery. The funeral service was in charge of the Masonic fraternity, Mr. Spencer having been a member of that order for many years. The Methodist minister from Willow also aided in the funeral service. There was a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends present to pay their respects to the noble and useful life that he had lived. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
