The heart broken young husband certainly has the sympathy of everybody here for they can realize to some extent the great ordeal that he is having to go through in giving up his loving companion. (18 Apr 1924, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): After a few weeks illness and much suffering, Mrs. Cleo Davis passed away at her home at Carter early Friday morning April 11, 1924. Every care possible was given the deceased one by those dear to her as they watched by her bed side until life ebbed away. Mrs. Cleo Davis was born a few miles south-west of Carter, on the old Davis homestead, September 1, 1904 where she lived until her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Davis, moved to Carter, when she was a mere child. Laura, as she was known amongst her friends and all who knew her, entered the Carter School and there made many friends whom she prized until death. She loved her friends and seemed to find joy and life in doing and making life happy for others. On October the (blank), 1920 she was married to Mr. Cleo Davis, well known and industrious young man, of Carter, and together they entered upon the path of life together. On the lots given the happy couple by Laura's father, they built a cozy little home and here she entertained her friends with much pride and joy. Interment was made in the Carter Cemetery Friday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. McCollum, Baptist Minister, officiating. The service was very impressive and words of great consolation were spoken to the bereaved ones. A chorus of young folks chanted beautiful and fitting songs as the many friends and loved ones paid last respects to the mother, sister, daughter and friend who was loved amongst us. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Besides her many, many friends Mrs. Davis leaves many devoted loved ones who mourn her loss: A devoted husband, Mr. Cleo Davis, two small children, Cleo Jack, age 2 years and Billy John, age 1 year. A faithful father, Mrs. E. J. Davis. Brothers, sisters and their families: Mr. and Mrs. Edd Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Gee Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Van Lundie; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Currier; Mr. and Mrs. Med Mullins and Charley Davis. Besides the immediate family she leaves loved ones of her husband's family who are in deep sorrow for the deceased. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Davis, father and mother-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Davis; Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Davis; Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Brownlee; Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Foster; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davis. She also leaves a number of close relatives. May the loved ones and friends be comforted as this life passes from amongst us. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
