(6 Apr 1906, Cheyenne Sunbeam, Cheyenne, Roger Mills Co, OK): Our community was shocked last Monday to learn that John Dewey was dying. He had been suffering some pain in the appendix region all the preceding week, but attended school and was even present at the Olto Club meeting at the school house Friday night. Drs. Tedrowe, Standifer and Wallace were called and their verdict, after thorough examination, was that young Dewey's trouble was appendicitis, and that he must be operated upon immediately. Saturday afternoon at three o'clock the operation was performed and the result completely verified the correctness of the doctors' diagnosis, for the appendix was swollen badly, pus had formed and small, hard pieces of pecon (sic) shell were found in the appendix, making an operation absolutely necessary and immediate. The surgical work was quick, accurate and successful, but the patient's heart, never strong since his serious illness from typhoid fever, was not strong enough to restore his circulation after the operation, and he died at three o'clock Monday afternoon. School adjourned at that hour and the funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church by Prof. Scott, assisted by Rev. Mauldin on Tuesday. The High school students attended in a body, the choir and pall bearers being his schoolmates. The service was one of the most impressive ever seen in Cheyenne. Our citizens unite in heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved family. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
