W. ADAIR FORMERLY OF ELK CITY. Word was received here Friday of the death of J. W. Adair, a former well-known citizen of Elk City, who passed away at the home of his sister in Smithville, Tenn., where he has been living since the death of his wife. He has been in poor health for two years, suffering from hardening of the arteries and a complication of diseases. The body was shipped to Elk City. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, South, on Sunday afternoon. The members of the A F & A M marched in a body from the undertaking parlors to the church. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. A. Conway, Ed Sims, Ward Ulmer, Amos Williams, Henry Hunter and Otis A. Thomas. A very large crowd of his former friends were in attendances. Many beautiful flowers covered the casket. The choir sang "The Rock that is Higher than I". Rev. O. L. Adams read the obituary of Mr. Adair and also led in prayer. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung, and after scripture reading by Rev. Adams, he called on Dr. Jester and Henry Hunter to give tributes to the man they knew so well and who had been a true friend, a christian, a business man of honesty and integrity, one who had high ideals and every found on the right side. He was unassuming and quiet in character, never shirked a duty, never betrayed a friend, never failed to meet every obligation. His influence was always on the right side and one never had to guess where he was on moral issues, his christian life was consistent. He was a devoted husband and father. His every care and ambition was for his family, and he could not do enough to help them. He was truly honored by those who knew him, as attested by the many kind words spoken in tribute to him. As the choir sang "That Beautiful Land" the friends took their last look at the body after which the remains were taken to beautiful Fairlawn cemetery, where the Masons were in charge. James William Adair was born in Sparta, Tenn., October 29th, and died in Smithville, Tennessee, Nov. 13, 1924, aged 77 years and 12 days. Four children are left to mourn the loss of a father, being Mrs. S. W. Flournoy, Mrs. C. R. Mahaffey, Winston G. Adair, and Mrs. J. B. Embrey. Another son, J. W. Jr (Will) died October, 1918. Ralph and Allen Adair, sons of the J. W. Adair Jr. came over from Weatherford to attend the funeral and were accompanied by their cousin Preston McFatridge.
