John Allbright died at his home, eight miles south-west of Elk City, May 13. Mr. Allbright had been seriously afflicted for more than a year. He was one of the elderly men who came to the new country and settled on a "claim." He was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors and all who knew him. He was a consistent christian, a member of the Baptist church at Merritt, and a member of the John B. Gordon camp, U. C. V. The funeral services were conducted by T. D. Penn at the family residence. The body was followed by a long concourse of friends to the Elk City cemetery where all that is mortal of John Allbright was laid to rest by gentle, loving hands, to wait the call to rise again, at the last day. (17 May 1906, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): John Albright, an old and respected citizen living eight miles southwest of Elk City and two miles southeast of Merritt, died at his home last Sunday afternoon at four o'clock of bright's disease. Deceased had been a sufferer from this dreaded disease for over two years. He was born in Texas, March 10, 1842, and died May 13, 1906, age 64 years, 2 months and 3 days. He was a soldier in the Confederate army during the civil war. He was a man of sterling qualities, a brave soldier, a good neighbor, a kind husband and indulgent father. He was a man well liked and made friends with all who he came in contact with. He came to this county six years ago last November. A wife and four children - three sons and one daughter survive him. The children are: One son in Texas, Philip C. of Elk City, and Fred and Edna at the old home place. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city, on Monday afternoon at 1:30 conducted by Elder Penn, after which the remains were escorted from the church by the members of the John B. Gordon Post, U. C. V. to the north cemetery.
