F. Amend, died last Friday July 12th, 1918, of heart trouble after an illness of several months. He was born in Brookfield, Mo., January 14th, 1900, and his body accompanied by his parents was taken to that place to be laid to rest by the side of two other children who had died infancy. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the Catholic Church in Brookfield, and interment made in the Catholic cemetery. For a number of years Leo was altar boy in the St. Joseph church in Elk City, giving up the place about six months ago when his health began to fail. In death he was dressed in the surplice he had worn during the time he was altar boy. He was a good christian boy. He knew he was in serious condition and told the family he was not afraid to die but for the sake of the home folks he would like to get well. He was the home boy, and the loving words said of his character, disposition and life, by his parents, brothers and sisters was evidence of the beautiful life he had lived. Such a life and such a death only makes us realize more than ever that there is a home beyond, and knowing the one they loved so, and who was so good, kind and pure is there, makes Heaven more precious to them and makes those who are left more anxious to live so they can meet their loved ones again. Leo's life was short, but it was filled with kind deeds, loving acts and honoring his parents. He will be sadly missed in the home, in the church and by his friends. He wanted to see his brother Earl, who has been in Camp Bowie, but when the telegram reached that place, word was returned that Earl had left the day before for Memphis, Tenn. Besides the parents, five brothers, Frank, Earl, Paul, William and Carl and three sisters, Nellie, Marie and Lyola are left to mourn the loss of a loved son and brother. The News-Democrat family joins with their many friends in extending to the bereaved ones, their deepest and sincerest sympathy. (11 July 1918: LEO AMEND VERY ILL. Leo Amend, the eighteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Amend, is seriously ill at their home with leakage of the heart. Leo's many friends regret very much to learn that he is considered in serious condition and all are hoping he will have a change for the better. )
