(12 Nov 1929, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): RITES READ FOR MRS. E. V. ARNOLD. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the Grubitz and Son funeral home for Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold, one of the earliest settlers in the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation, who died here Saturday, November 9, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. D. Taylor. Rev. Carl V. Covey, pastor of the First Christian church, was in charge of services. Mrs. Arnold was born in Salem, Mississippi, February 3, 1845 and moved with her parents to Arkansas, where she married Jasper Arnold in 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold came to Oklahoma at the opening of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation and settled on land near the present city of Cheyenne. Mrs. Arnold was truly a pioneer. She braved the thinly settled territory miles from a town, with her small children. The Arnolds did much toward promoting the town of Cheyenne and Mr. Arnold was the first postmaster in that town. Since the death of her husband in 1923, Mrs. Arnold has made her home with her daughters, Mrs. B. H. Monroe of Pratt, Kansas, and Mrs. Taylor of Elk City. Mrs. Arnold leaves of her immediate family four children: two daughters, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Monroe; and two sons, C. M. Arnold of Flagstaff, Arizona, and D. H. Arnold of Vernon, Texas. Besides these she leaves a number of other relatives and friends in this and other cities.
