Only a few days before she had been with her schoolmates in the Freshman class looking the picture of health. On last Friday she underwent an operation for appendicitis, her uncle, Dr. Vinyard, of Amarillo, performing operation at the hospital. Soon after it became known she was in a very serious condition, and though she rallied some Tuesday morning and there was great hopes that she would be all right, it was only temporary, and she passed away at 2:30 in the afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon. A very large crowd attended these services, and the grief shown by her many school mates and friends attested the great love they had for Mildred. She was always of such a sweet disposition, with a smile for everyone, and all who knew her was her friend. She joined the Baptist church two years ago and was a faithful member of the B.Y.P.U. and Sunday School class. Eight girls acted as honorary pall bearers, one the president of the Freshman class, Miss Story Banks and others her associates in the B.Y.P.U., who were Misses Lillian and Henrietta Kemp, Ida May and Virgie Haney and Bessie May Hamilton. Beautiful flowers covered the casket and the young ladies carried several floral pieces. Besides the flowers from the relatives and friends, there were some from the Freshman class, her Sunday School class, her teachers at school and others. The Baptist choir had charge of the singing. Rev. Hamilton led in a very earnest prayer and preached a very comforting sermon taking as his text "The gift of God is eternal life." Prof. A. G. Steele made the closing prayer, one which was helpful to all. A large number accompanied the body to Fairlawn cemetery where interment was made. Mildred Cleone Baker was born November 1st, 1908, at Tucumcari, New Mexico, and died February 19th, 1923 (sic), celebrating her 15th birthday last November. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Baker. Her parents and a sister, Velma, and a brother, Virgil, are left to mourn her loss besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Her brother is in the navy in South America and it will be sad news for him when he hears of the death of his beloved sister. He was expected to be home in May and Mildred had looked forward with much joy for him to come. Among those in attendance at the funeral was her grandmother, Mrs. G. S. Vinyard, of Claude, Texas, Mrs. George Baker and daughter Dorothy and Lee Luper of Amarillo, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wells of Wellington, Texas. Dr. Vinyard and Mr. Baker started from Amarillo in car yesterday morning, but had breakdown at Jerico, and had to return home. The News Democrat join the many friends in extending deepest sympathy.
