All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ BALLARD, SIDNEY (24 Oct 1918, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): SIDNEY BALLARD DIES AT RANGER, TEXAS Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Ballard, received word on the 14th, that their son, Sidney Ballard, was ill at the home of his uncle, J. M. Ballard, of Ranger, Texas. Sidney having been there for sometime as assistant bookkeeper for Ballard & Russell, of that place. His mother left immediately for Ranger, and as he became worse Mr. Ballard was called Wednesday night, and told of his serious condition. He left immediately for his son's bedside. Sidney had been sick with influenza and pneumonia followed. Besides the doctors at Ranger doctors were called from Fort Worth and Oklahoma City and everything possible done for him that could be but he passed away, Monday, October 21st. The remains accompanied by the parents were brought to Elk City Tuesday night and placed in the Geo. Grubitz undertaking parlors. On account of another son, Coy Ballard being sick, the funeral arrangements were not made at the time of this writing, but notice may appear later on second page. Interment though will be made in Fairview (sic) cemetery. Sidney was born in DeKalb, Texas, January 21, 1899, and was nineteen years, nine months and twenty-one days old. He was an exceptionally bright young man, and was held in high regard by all who knew him. So many of our citizens became acquainted with him two years ago when he had charge of the "swimming pool" on his father's place, which was visited by so many of our people. Sidney was always full of fun and made everyone have a good time when he was around. He loved his home and the dear ones in the home, and always gave his friends a glad welcome. His parents and three brothers are left to mourn his loss. Verner Ballard is in Battery A in France, Coy, aged fourteen and Johnnie aged twelve who are at home. The family have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
