All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ BALLEW, JAMES (11 Oct 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services for James Ballew who died at his home in Butler Monday morning October 1, were held at the Community Hall in Butler Wednesday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. John C. Carman, pastor of the Church of Christ in Elk City, conducted the funeral services. Mr. Ballew was 68 years old at the time of his death. He was born at Lynchburg, Va., March 5, 1860. He moved from Virginia to Missouri and then to Texas. Thirty-eight years ago he moved with his family to the Indian Territory and from there to Custer county thirty years ago. He had lived at Butler for six years. Mr. Ballew died suddenly but seemed in good health at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie Ballew, five children; L. M. Ballew, Butler; Maud Murray, Canute; J. P. Ballew, Elk City; June Dunlap, Hammon, and H. P. Ballew, Butler; his brother(s) Charlie Ballew, Clarendon, Texas; J. W. Ballew, Altus; Lynn Ballew, Clarendon, Texas; his sisters Mrs. Roy Reynolds, Piolt (sic) Point, Texas, and Mrs. Bill Pebley, Anna High, California, and his mother who lives at Pilot Point, Calif. (sic). Mr. Ballew was a retired farmer and had many friends in this section of the country. He was the father of J. P. Ballew, manager of the Murphy Hardware company at Elk City. Interment was made at Edwardsville Cemetery (Washita Co, Ok.). (18 Oct 1928, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): James Bellow was born in Linchberg (sic), Virginia, March 5, 1860, and departed this life on Oct. 1, 1928, at the age of 68 years 6 months and 26 days. (Missing line) and settled near Edwardsville, where he lived until six years ago, when he moved to Butler, Okla. He was united to Sallie Derrickson, to this union was born six children as follows: Luther, now of Butler, Okla., Mrs. Maud Murry, Canute, Okla.; Perry Ballew, Elk City, Okla; Mrs. Willie Larue, deceased; Mrs. June Dunlap, Hammon, Okla.; Henry Ballew, Butler, Okla. Besides those of the immediate family there are three brothers, J. W. Ballew, Altus, Okla.; L. Ballew, Clearendon, Tex.; Chas. Ballew, Vernon, Texas, and two sisters, Mrs. Bob Reynolds, Pilat (sic) Point, Texas, Mrs. Wm. Pebley, Annahein (sic), Calif.; and the dear old mother, now 98 years old came from Pilat Point, Texas to be present at the funeral. The final summons came at 12 minutes to 10, Monday, Oct. 1, 1928, at the family home in Butler. He had been in his usual health when suddenly the Angel of Death appeared, a palor came over his face, his heart forgot to beat, tired eyelids were drawn over tired eyes and lips were closed forever and he was dead. To accommodate his large circle of friends the funeral was held in the Community Building, where six flower maids led by Mrs. J. A. Hargue preceded the remains to the altar which was a bank of flowers. The Rev. Harmon of Elk City, pastor of the Church of Christ, for which the deceased had held membership for 25 years, conducted the services after which the long line of cars winded their way to the Edwardsville Cemetery, which was near his old home. There was a large concorse (sic) of old friends gathered to pay their last respects. F. R. Murphy, out of respect for the family closed his Chain of Hardware Stores the afternoon of the funeral and all employees were their (sic) enmass. The pall-bearers were as follows: Messrs. Wm. Stanton of Altus, Joe Taylor of Butler, A. C. Armstrong of Foss, Fred White of Edwardsville, Cy Howenstine of Arapaho, Joe Wilcox of Foss. The deceased was a man of excellent character and reputation departing himself honorably and kindly towards all men. He was held in highest esteem by his friends and his life was a fine example of noble devotion to his family and friends, and as a neighbor we feel to say that like the good Samariton (sic) he was never known to "pass by on the order side" but complied with the law. - Foss Enterprise.
