(3 Apr 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Chas. D. Barber of near Carpenter, died in Elk City, Sunday, March 30th from cancer. He was seventy-two years of age. Since above was in type we received the following from our Carpenter correspondent: Everyone in this neighborhood was saddened Sunday by the death of our esteemed friend and neighbor, Chas. Barber, who died at the hospital in Elk City, and was buried Monday afternoon in Thompson cemetery. Charles Barber was born in the state of New York, September 22, 1846, and died March 30, 1919, age 72 years, 6 months and 8 days. He was a veteran of the Civil War and was married to Florence Port (? smudged), July 1870. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Mrs. Ida Richer, who died several years ago and William Barber, now residing at Clinton, who with his mother, is left to mourn the loss of so kind a husband and father. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances, for he was ever ready to lend a helping hand; was always prompt, faithful and honest in all his dealings. Besides raising his own family he and his faithful wife has reared a niece and four grand-children, and he put forth as great an effort to educate and influence those children as any parent could have done. He acted as mail messenger at Carpenter four years, having resigned last November on account of his health. The post office was closed Monday from 1 to 5 o'clock in due respect to him. This village has indeed lost a noble citizen who will be greatly missed, but always remembered, and the bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.
