Carl Barnett was born in Texas April 22, 1908. Died at Elk City, Sept. 12, 1929, age 20 years, 4 months and 20 days. He was prepared for burial at the Gentry-Killough funeral home and sent to Littlefield, Texas, where interment was made. Carl Barnett's first trip out into the world proved to be his last. Injured as he attempted to "hop" a freight train on the Rock Island line near the county fair grounds, he died at the Musick hospital here Thursday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held at his home at Littlefield, Tex., Sunday afternoon. W. E. Barnett, father of the 22 (sic) year old boy, who came here for the youth's body, pieced out the tragic tale which Carl was unable to relate following the accident. The son, taken to the hospital, gave his mane and told how to locate his parents and then lapsed into unconsciousness and never rallied. The father said that Carl was on his first trip away from home. He had left his parents and seven brothers and sisters on the farm home near Littlefield and had started out to hunt for work. Carl had helped his father on the farm during the summer. When the parent and his son completed their work, both took jobs on a highway construction project. This completed, Mr. Barnett went back to the family home, being summoned there by the illness of two younger children. Carl started out to find work. The next thing his parents heard about him was the message of his fatal accident. With Carl at the time he was hurt, were two other men who gave their names as Shannon C. Duvall, 30, of Atkins, Ark., and Glenn Howard, 20, of Enid. They remained with Barnett until he was cared for in the hospital and then disappeared. When adjusters and investigators of the Rock Island appeared here the following day to question the men they were nowhere to be found. Mr. Barnett gave it as his opinion that Carl had met up with the other men somewhere along the way, as he did not start from home with them, the parent declared.
